Chester C. Powell age 85, of Athens, IL passed away on Sunday March 7, 2010 at Sunny Acres Nursing Home, near Petersburg, IL

Daughters – Janet (Don) McKee of Manteca, CA
Nancy (Stephen) Leithleiter of Monticello, IL
Debra (Larry) Cothern of Chaska, MN
Eleven Grandchildren
Twenty-Two Great-grandchildren
One Great-great grandchild
Three Brothers – Homer Powell of Sherman
Harlan Powell of Athens
David Powell of Athens
Sister – Dorothy Chunes of Springfield
Several Nieces & Nephews

Mr. Powell was born April 12, 1924 in Athens, IL the son of Amos Ambrose and Daisy Litherland Powell.

He married Wilma L. Nance on June 25, 1944.

Mr. Powell is preceded in death by two sons, Robert Clayton in 1945 and David Powell in 2002. He is also preceded in death by four brothers, Tom, Joe, Robert and Cecil Powell and by three sisters, Minnie Lynch, Fannie Hamrick and Barbara Wilson.

Mr. Powell served in the US Army during WW II, and was a member of the Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Springfield. He also was a member of the American Legion Post #650 in Mansfield, IL. and a member of the Decatur Teamsters Local #79.

Visitation will be on Wednesday March 10, 2010 at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM and where funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM.

Rev. Ronald Waltrop officiating.
Burial will be held at Joel Hall Cemetery in Athens.

Aunt Wilma and family -
I am so sorry to hear about Uncle Chester. He was a good family man. One of the best Powell men. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and wish I could be there. I’m sure mom and dad (Mary and Gene) will be there for me as well. I love you.

Wilma & Family:
It was with sadness we read about Chester’s passing from this life to his eternal reward. I’m sure you’re grieving over the loss of your loved one. Time will erase the grief, but you will always retain the fond memories.

Dear Wilma, Janet, Nancy and Debbie - I am sorry to hear of your loss. I always enjoyed spending time at your house. Wilma, you and Chester were always so good to us kids (even though you made us mind just like our parents would!). You are a wonderful family. Nancy, I really appreciate the help you have been to me (with the bus trips). Even though I haven’t gotten to see Janet or Debbie in years I can remember a lot of fun times. Janet, do you still jump off stages and do the splits? Deb, I hope we didn’t pick too much on you and David.

I know you have many wonderful memories of your husband and dad to help sustain you.

Dear Debbie, Nancy, Janet and Wilma,

I was sorry to read of your Dad’s passing. Like Jeanine, I have fond memories of your family growing up. There were many times when Debbie and I wanted to ride around the square in FC and with a few little tears, your Dad would always relinquish the keys to his car. He was a good man and I’m sure he will be missed by all.

Wilma, Janet, Nancy and good friend Debbie: Think of you often and was saddened to hear about your loss of your husband and father. I wish we were closer and I could make it to the visitation — because I surely would!! Would love to see you all but not for this reason, but seems as tho these are the times we gather anymore, as much as I hate to say it. Please know I will be thinking of all of you now and in the future with love and prayers!! As ever, Doris Ann
