Cremation is a process that prepares the body for its final disposition. By using the crematorium, the body is reduced to ashes by burning.
Laws & Requirements Regarding Cremation
There may be legal requirements or crematory requirements for this process.
  • In Illinois, cremation may not be done until 24 hours following death.
  • A coroner's permit is required for cremation.
  • Embalming is not required for cremation. The funeral home may require embalming if you select a ceremony option with public viewing.
  • Caskets are not required to be purchased for a cremation. The crematory requires an alternative container for the remains to be placed in for the cremation.
  • Based on individual cemetery policies, an urn or urn vault may be required for burial of cremains.
Cremation Service Options
Cremation does not limit your choices for services. You may personalize the services as you desire. Cremation provides an alternative to traditional funeral services yet still allows the option of a visitation and funeral services, should they be selected. Options for the ashes from the human remains include: burial in a cemetery, scattering of the ashes, placement in an urn to be kept at home, or placement in a columbarium niche.
