Craig M. Tobias

d. May 6, 2025

Athens

Craig Tobias, age 52, of Athens, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, surrounded by those who loved him most.

Born on April 25, 1973, in Springfield, Illinois, Craig was the cherished son of Charles and Diann (Chrans) Tobias. On May 19, 2001, he married the love of his life, Becky Hewitt, in Sherman, Illinois, and together they built a life full of laughter, love, and deep devotion to their son, Cody.

Craig’s passing leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of his wife, Becky; his beloved son, Cody; his parents, Chuck and Diann; nephew, Gavin Hewitt; uncle, John Tobias; and the many cousins, friends, and neighbors who were fortunate enough to know his warmth and kindness. He is now reunited in peace with his aunts and uncles, as well as his father-in-law, John Hewitt, and mother-in-law, Linda Hewitt.

Craig was a 1991 graduate of Athens High School and earned a degree in finance from Eastern Illinois University in 1995. He built a meaningful career in the banking industry, starting at Illini Bank and later devoting nearly two decades to Marine Bank. At the time of his passing, Craig was proudly serving as the Chief Information Officer at Warren Boynton State Bank in New Berlin.

A man of simple joys and deep passions, Craig was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He found happiness in cheering from the stands, collecting bobbleheads, and sharing the thrill of the game with friends and family. He had a special gift for turning everyday moments into lasting memories—whether it was listening for owls with the neighbors, sharing laughs at driveway gatherings, or savoring Saturday breakfasts with his mom and dad.

Craig’s love for life shone brightest in his role as a father. Supporting Cody in sports and school brought him immeasurable pride and joy. He didn’t just attend games—he coached, encouraged, and stood as his son’s biggest fan. Some of Cody’s fondest memories are of playing catch and shooting hoops with his dad in their driveway—moments that now echo with love and legacy.

Craig will be remembered for his easy smile, his deep loyalty to those he loved, and the quiet strength he carried through life. His "bar chair" on Friday nights was more than a seat—it was a place where stories were shared and friendships were deepened. He found peace in tending to his yard, and joy in the everyday rhythm of life.

Visitation for Craig will be held from 9:00 AM until time of funeral services at 12:00 PM on Monday, May 12, 2025 at the Athens Christian Church. Burial will be held immediately after the services at Joel Hall Cemetery in Athens.
