Dale Abeln

Dale Abeln, Sr., age 65, of Athens, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.

He was born on November 14, 1959, in Springfield, the son of Lewis “Peck” and Mary JoAnn (Beard) Abeln.

Dale married Linda Turner on March 17, 1980.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda; his children, Shawn (Angie) Primm, Keri (Trevor) Orme, Dale Abeln, Jr., and Clint (Michelle) Abeln; his mother, JoAnn Abeln; grandchildren, Haley, Caleb, Connor, Gracie, Hannah, and Walker; siblings, Brenda (Ed) Connelly, Sheree Abeln Meyer, Diane (Tom) Hester, and Dean Abeln; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis “Peck” Abeln.

Dale graduated from Athens High School in 1978. He began working at the University of Illinois Springfield at the age of 18, where he advanced into custodial management in industrial supply. He retired at 55 after a long and dedicated career.

A true entrepreneur at heart, Dale was known for his willingness to lend a hand with just about anything. Whether it was car repairs, tree trimming, yard work, or odd jobs, he was always there for friends and family. He also worked for the Village of Cantrall for several years, continuing his commitment to service and community.

Dale was a proud member of the Sons of the American Legion, the Lake Press Club in Springfield, and the Eagles Club in Riverton.

He loved the outdoors—fishing, hunting, camping—and was always up for a game of darts or time spent with loved ones. Dale had a generous spirit and a heart for helping others. He consistently put others before himself and never hesitated to offer support where it was needed.

Dale will be remembered for his kindness, work ethic, and sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation for Dale will be held from 5:00 until time of funeral services 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens. Cremation rites will be accorded after the services. A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion at a later date.
