David "Floyd" Spaulding

David “Floyd” Spaulding, age 92, of Petersburg, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2025 at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Petersburg, Illinois.

Floyd was born on August 31, 1932 in Dixon, Missouri, the son of Robert and Fern (Hively) Spaulding. Floyd married Frances Cunningham on September 14, 1957 in Delavan, Illinois.

Mourning his passing are his wife, Frances; his daughters, Sheila (Dennis) Wiss and Alice Larnerd; grandchildren, Zacharia Spaulding, Jade (Jimmy) Thomas, Celia (Ben) Lanctot, Guy (Rachel) Wiss, Garrett Wiss, Maxwell Martin and Alexandra Martin; several great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his sons Bobby and John “JS”; and his daughter, Teresa.

Floyd proudly served in the US Navy from 1950 until 1954 during the Korean War. He was stationed on the aircraft carriers USS Antietam and USS Shangri-La.

After serving in the Navy, Floyd worked for Caterpillar in Peoria and later sold farm equipment for Watson Brothers in Delavan, Baugher Implement and Cramer Allis Chalmers in Greenview. He also worked for Country Companies and George Merrihew selling multiple lines of insurance. Floyd later started his own independent agency, Spaulding Insurance, on the square in Greenview. He bought, owned, and operated Tripp Hardware/ Lumberyard store in Greenview. During this time he also served on the Greenview City Council and on the Menard County Housing Board.

In his retirement he worked for Country Hills Golf Course for 17 years and was a board member since 2011. He was employed by the Menard County Fair Board for many years, as well as being a board member. However, his favorite job was working for Sanert Auction Company as Ron Sanert’s Executive Assistant.

Floyd was very active in his community. He was a life-time member of the Greenview AMVETS Post #179, where he served as a Commander from 1975-1976. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #5754, VFW Post #6871, American Legion Post #0672 in Middletown, a former Rotary International member and a Menard County Historical Society member.

He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball and Illini basketball fan. Floyd had a running dialogue of jokes, a great memory, and a love for people. Above all, he treasured his family and friends. He was larger than life and to know him is to love him. Floyd will be dearly missed and always remembered.

No services will be held at this time per Floyd’s request, choosing to wait to be laid to rest alongside his bride of 67 years, when the time comes.
