David Lucas, age 82, of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village in Springfield, Illinois.

David was born October 26, 1940 in Bloomington, Illinois the son of Wayne and Ethel (Hohenstein) Lucas.

He married Pamela Millar on February 14, 1973 in Stowe, Vermont.

Mourning his passing are his wife, Pamela; children, Michael (Nell) Lucas of Shawnee, KS, Chris (Beth) Lucas of Highlands Ranch, CO, Sarah Lucas (Rob Sullivan) of Edmond, OK, and Jessica Lucas (Bob Stelzer) of Oshkosh, WI; four grandchildren, Nora, Ella, Kyle, and Sydney; two sisters, Connie Kocher of Powell, OH and Cathy (Robin) Dexter of Bellingham, WA; several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by a sister, Janet Whitwood; brother, William Lucas; and his parents.

David was a graduate of Bloomington High School, Bloomington, IL and the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.  David was a career Illinois state employee and worked in numerous departments during his 40+ year career.  At his retirement in 2002, he was a regional manager for the Social Security disability program administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services.

David was an avid bicyclist throughout his life, rode an estimated 200,000+ miles and was a certified bicycling instructor with The League of American Bicyclists, a national bicycling association.

He was a member of Ride Illinois, the Illinois bicycle education/advocacy association and was a member of the Springfield Bicycle Club for over 50 years.  He was also a member of the Springfield Milers, a BMW motorcycle club and rode his trusty R1000CS from coast to coast and border to border, often accompanied by Pam, his wife, a faithful and fearless co-rider.

No services will be held per David’s request.  In lieu of flowers, David asked that contributions be made to the Garden Club at Country Place Condominium Association; 230 Country Place; Springfield, IL 62703.

Cremation rites will be accorded.  A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

  1. Had the pleasure of working with Dave at the “Bureau “ Was a supervisor in his section for many years .We both retired at about the same time. Sorry for your loss

  2. I knew Dave from the Bike Cub and as a member of our Coffee group, he was a lot of fun always something interesting to share.

  6. I never worked for Dave but got to know him as my desk was in close proximity to his office.
    I knew he was a bike rider from seeing him with his helmet at work but also some friends of mine were in the bike club with him.
    My sympathy goes out to the family.

  7. I had the pleasure of meeting David at Lewis Memorial, I was his housekeeper. David made my days so much brighter, I enjoyed talking to him & Pam. I enjoyed the many smiles david had. He was a very kind & sweet soul. I will surely miss you David.may you fly high my friend.

  8. Dave came into my bicycle shop after i opened in the early 70s. Over the next 35 years we would go on bike club
    rides. He was the best guy to ride with because he told the best (funny) stories. As a customer, also a good one,
    stopping in sometimes to just say hey and talk for a bit. Most of the time when to talked to Dave some how you would feel better. He was one of the good ones. Very sorry for your loss.

  9. We were saddened to hear of Dave’s passing.

    Dave was our first connection to the Springfield Bicycle Club. He helped us renew our interest in bicycling. He taught us so much about riding and basic bike maintenance.

    We enjoyed his weekly neighborhood rides, which provided an opportunity to see Springfield in a different light he had so many wonderful, funny stories.

    Later, Dave helped us start an SBC Bicycle Academy to help other riders learn good riding habits and basic bicycle maintenance.

    Our deepest condolences to Pam and Dave’s family.

  10. So sorry to hear about Dave. We knew Dave from the Springfield Bicycle Club. A great person to ride with and talk to. It was my pleasure to know Dave and he will be missed. Our condolences to his family.
