John C. Dirks, age 91, passed away on Sunday January 11, 2015 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL.
John was born September 10, 1923 in Cantrall, Illinois ,the son of Dirk (Dick) Janssen and Elise Sophia (Seipel) Dirks.
He married Betty Walkup on December 24, 1950.
John was preceded in death by his brother Lewis Dirks, and sisters Anna Louise Dirks and Dorothy Caroompas.
He is survived by his wife Betty; his daughter, Linda (Michael) Twomey of Hinsdale, IL, and their daughter, Kat Twomey of Hood River, Oregon; his son, Chris (Jody) Dirks, their son, Christian and their daughter, Megan Dirks, all of Rochester, Illinois.
John served in the U.S. Army during World War II and is a Veteran of Foreign Wars.
He spent most of his career, 1953-1988, as a printer at The State Journal Register in Springfield.
John and Betty are members of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Springfield.
Visitation will be held at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens from 10:00 until time of funeral services at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 17, 2015.
Rev. Paul Hemenway will be officiating.
Burial will be at Indian Point Cemetery near Athens.
Memorials can be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Our sympathies to all the Dirks family on the loss of John. The neighborhood won’t seem the same without John and seeing him and Betty on their walks or John and Betty hosting their garage sales or seeing John out walking and him stopping to ask how our family was doing. We’ll miss him greatly!
