Obituary

Donald McMillan was born on August 27, 1954 in Springfield, Illinois to Dolores (Patrilla) McMillan and Charles McMillan.

He attended grade school in Cornland and graduated from Elkhart High School.

He married Sue VanPelt on November 12, 1983, and a daughter Sarah (McMillan) Conner was born on February 11, 1986.

Chuck learned farming by his father’s side on the family farm. He continued farming until retiring in 2014. Chuck was a lifetime member of Carlock Lodge Mechanicsburg Free Masons. He advanced into Ansar Shrine. He served the community for many years as a board member of Menard Electric Cooperative.

Chuck was the life of the party. His life philosophy was to work hard but to play harder. Those who attended the annual Sweet Corn Parties or Bonfire Nights at The Farm know the fun he made for everyone. Chuck put meticulous effort into everything he did. He was known to have occasional stubbornness, and orneriness, but was willing to help any friend in need. Every summer he spent many days boating on the lake with family and friends. Vacations with family and friends were times spent making happy memories.

The four highlights of Grandpa Chuck’s life were his grandchildren SJ, Elowyn, Corbin, and Calvin. Whether they were riding on the golfcart, feeding the birds, or just watching a show some of his happiest times were spent with his grandchildren. The phrase “Can we go to Grandpa’s?” was heard daily. Chuck seldom missed an event for the grandkids and was often seen on the sidelines cheering them on enthusiastically.

He enjoyed driving his Corvette. Whether at car shows or just cruising, Chuck took pleasure in meticulously cleaning and showing his car. One of his proudest achievements was a third place for his Corvette at the 2026 Master Road Car Show.

Survivors include his wife, his daughter and son-in-law, and his grandchildren of Williamsville. Also, two sisters, Carol (Harvey) Garecht and Sharon (Patsy) McMillan. Numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and many cousins. Also, a multitude of friends--especially those who lovingly knew him as “Uncle Chuck”.

A visitation for Chuck will be held from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, November 9, 2026 at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens with Masonic services being held at 6:30 PM. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at 10:00 AM also at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service.

Memorials can be given to the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight or the Mechanicsburg Carlock Lodge #904 A.F. & A.M.
