James “Jim” Elmore, age 89, of Petersburg, passed away on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at his residence.
He was born on March 29, 1936 near Petersburg, Illinois, the son of Frank and Helen (Stephenson) Elmore.
He married Beatrice “Bea” Brown on June 13, 1956 in Petersburg, Illinois.
Mourning his passing are his wife, Bea; sons, Dave (wife Suzanne) Elmore, Robert (wife Ashlie) Elmore, and Russell (wife Julie) Elmore; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Nelson; several nieces and nephews; and a second cousin.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Helen Elmore.
Jim first started his working career at Ahrenkiel’s in Athens and Wildes in Petersburg, and later he worked for Allis-Chalmers and retired from State of Illinois Department of Transportation as a mechanic. He, Bea and son owned and operated Elmore’s Garden Center for nearly 20 years.
He was a member of the New Life Baptist Church in Athens serving as deacon and positions of leadership.
Jim loved music, singing in the groups “Five Good Friends” and “Harmony Trio.” He played the guitar for most of his life.
Jim served for the US Air Force from 1955 until 1961, where he did basic training in Wichita Falls, TX where he met his wife, Bea. He served at the Travis Air Force Base and Newfoundland, following the B-52s.
Jim was third generation farmer on his family’s land, where his sons are continuing the business as fourth generation landowners.
Visitation for Jim will be held from 9:30 AM until time of funeral services at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at New Life Baptist Church in Athens with Rev. Jerry Darden officiating.
