Jan Shirley

Jan Shirley, age 70, of Athens, passed away Monday April 24, 2017, peacefully at her residence.
She was born, the daughter of Rudolph and Eileen Shockey of Petersburg, on July 6, 1946 at St. John’s hospital in Springfield. She attended Petersburg Harris High School and was a lifelong resident of Menard County. She worked as a bookkeeper for Balster Trucking and Donley Trucking for many years. She also had a vision of becoming a cosmetologist. In 1995, she enrolled at Lake Victoria Beauty Academy, and went onto graduate. Soon after, she opened Visions Unlimited Salon and Tanning in Athens, and had recently retired. She enjoyed photography, and working with the community. Jan was also very proud mother and grandmother. She served the Athens community for 14 years as an active member of the City Council, and various committees within. Jan was also a member of the Zoning Board for 8 years.
She is survived by two sons, Scott Shockey (Anna Skeeters) of Petersburg, and Aaron Shirley (Kerry Lowry) of Athens; one sister, Sue (Mori) Fierce of Vero Beach, FL; two brothers, Jerry (Sandy) Shockey of Springfield, and Rodney Shockey of Peoria; and grandchildren; Brooke Shockey, Hali Shirley, Zane Shirley, Abby Shirley, and Orion Lowry.
Jan is preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother Robbie.
Cremation rights have been accorded.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Menard County EMS.
Memorial visitation for Jan will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 from 5-7 PM at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens, IL.
