Jean E. Kincaid, age 97, of Athens, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Villa East Health Care in Sherman, Illinois.

Jean was born on July 8, 1921 in Worland, WY, the daughter of Jeremiah and Verna McNeil.

She is survived by three daughters, Diane McCormick of Athens, Nancy (Roger) Bounds of Petersburg, Carol (Jack) Van Dyke of Dyer, IN; a step-son, Albert “Bert” (Donna) Kincaid of Athens; a step-daughter, Alexis Kay (Mike) Cantrall of Athens; nine grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; one brother, Bruce McNeil; and several nieces and nephews.

Jean is preceded in death by her first husband, Warren “Tony” Hughes; her second husband, Albert Kincaid; her son, Jerry Hughes; brother, Clarence; and son-in-law, Pat McCormick.

She was in the Army Nurse Corp during WW II and worked at Memorial Medical Center for many years after that.  She was proud of the fact that she worked at Memorial the first night it opened.

She was a member of the Athens United Methodist Church and was active in Martha Class.  She was involved with the Home Bureau for many years and was a 4-H leader when her daughters were young.

Visitation will be held at 9:00 AM until time of funeral services at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens.  Rev. Paulette Cott will be officiating. Burial will be held at Joel Hall Cemetery in Athens.

Memorials contributions may be made to the Athens Food Pantry.

  1. I’ve always thought of her as Mama Jean. She was always around while us kids got together. She was funny and caring. When I was in the hospital she was my nurse it was good knowing she was around since i was only a.kid. She will be missed. Treasure the memories, they will bring you lots of joy. RIP Jean for you were so loved by many people that you touched.

  2. Jean was in my Aunt Nita Marie Bottorff’s class. My mother is Connie Bottorff and mom and I would visit Jean at the Villa East. Very nice lady.

  3. My deepest sympathy to all of Jean’s family. Jean was a very dear person. Had a very beautiful sense of humor. She also was a dear & trusted friend to my Mother, Irene Henrikson. Bless all of her kids.
