Judith “Judy” S. Cully, 85, of Athens, died on Friday, June 7, 2024 at her home.

She was born December 3, 1938, in Canton, Illinois, the daughter of Fred A. and 
 Anna Laura (Moore) Somers. She graduated from Canton Senior High School in 1956 and MacMurray College in 1960.

Judy married Donald L. “Boots” Cully in Jacksonville, Illinois on August 13, 1960.  He preceded her in death on September 2, 2016.

Judy taught school for Springfield School District #186 from 1960 through 1964.  She later taught school for Athens Community School District from 1977 to 1994.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Boots; parents; and sister, Shirley Strode.

She is survived by her children, Susan (husband Don) Scheer of Athens and James (wife Kadnaha) Cully of McKinney, Texas.  Judy is also survived by her grandchildren, Ian Shaw, Veronica Cully, and Christina Cully; as well as former son-in-law, Vincent Shaw; sister, Peggy Frank; and many cousins, nephews, nieces, and dear friends.  

Judy loved reading, working puzzles, and genealogy.  She was a volunteer at the Athens Public Library and attended church at Athens Christian Church and Holy Family Catholic Church.

Visitation for Judy will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 12:30 PM at the Athens Christian Church with burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield at 2:00 PM.  Rev. Ken Gennicks will be officiating.  

Memorials contributions can be made to the Athens Public Library, Athens Christian Church, or Holy Family Catholic Church in Athens.
