Leonard L. Hill

d. May 12, 2021

Leonard L. Hill, age 99, of Glenarm, formerly of Cantrall, passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at his home.

Leonard was born on June 1, 1921 in Cantrall, Illinois, the son of Carl and Ollie Hurst Hill.

He married Lola Landreth on December 24, 1940.  She was his sweetheart for nearly 80 years.  She preceded him in death on October 28, 2016.  The family finds comfort in knowing they are now reunited in their heavenly home.

Mourning his passing are a son; L. Kent (wife Lynn) Hill of Glenarm, IL; a daughter, Linda (husband Danny) Clymer of Londonderry, NH; nine grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Kay Lankford; a son-in-law, Vic Lankford; two brothers, Maffet Hill and Melvin Hill; and a sister, Edith.

Leonard retired as a Division Manager for Sears, Roebuck, & Company after 31 years.  He was a member of Westside Christian Church for 52 years, serving on the Board as both a Deacon and Elder.  In recent years, he and Lola attended Athens Christian Church and Rochester Christian Church.

Leonard served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from November 1943 until February 1946. He was assigned as a Staff Sergeant to the 506th Fighter Group stationed on Iwo Jima during World War II.  In recent years, he had the privilege of participating with his son in the National Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. honoring World War II veterans.

Leonard and Lola were avid sports fans together, always on the sidelines of the many sporting events their children and grandchildren were involved in.  They were always loyal fans of the Fighting Illini and St. Louis Cardinals.  He also greatly enjoyed bowling and continued to bowl in local senior leagues up to age 93.

Driving was also a passion of his.  Early in his career, he drove cross-country buses.  Long into retirement, he and Lola made long road trips for travel until his eyesight slowed him down at 93.

Visitation for Leonard will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 from 10:00 until time of funeral service at 12:00 PM at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens.  Private family burial will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery.  He will be dearly missed.

Memorials can be made to Lincoln Christian University, Lincoln, Illinois.
