Loretta Mae Cantaño

Loretta Mae Castaño of Houston, Texas passed away in her home on September 8, 2026 at the age of 102 after a period of illness. She was supported through this difficult time, as ever, by family, friends, and community. She will be dearly missed.

She was born on September 12, 1923 in Springfield, Illinois. Loretta received degrees in English and social work from Springfield Junior College, the University of Illinois and Northwestern University. She worked as an English teacher before becoming a homemaker and was a lifelong volunteer. Loretta moved to Houston in 1973 and was a founding member of Kinsmen Lutheran Church. She followed her interests widely from reading to rooting for the Astros and caring for neighborhood cats. Throughout her life she followed a path of strong-willed kindness and service to others.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, and sisters. She is survived by her granddaughter, son-in-law, brother-in-law, and many members of her extended family in Springfield, Illinois.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kinsmen Lutheran Church Endowment Fund in Houston, Texas.

A funeral service will be held on September 19, 2026 at Mott & Henning Funeral Home, Athens, Illinois starting at 10:00 AM followed by a graveside service at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
