Springfield

Mrs. Mary Lee Davis, 98, of Springfield, passed away on June 24, 2025. She was born at home in Menard County on April 5, 1927, to Marvin and Eula Hill. She was married to Perry W. Davis for over 52 years prior to his passing in 1998.

Mary attended Menard County country schools as a child. Many years later, she received her GED. She was a Charter Member of the Petersburg Foursquare Church where she served in many capacities. Mary was a self-taught pianist and enjoyed playing for many years at the church, starting every service by playing “Sweet Hour of Prayer.” She retired from the First National Bank after over 15 years of employment. After her retirement, she volunteered at the Memorial Hospital Gift Shop for 13 years. She attended Calvary Church in Springfield.

Family and friends lovingly call Mary “the chicken lady” due to her collection of all things chicken. With their help, the collection has become quite large.

Mary leaves behind her daughter, Sherry Edwards of Springfield; her sister, Louise Browne of Greenview; four grandchildren: Jon Davis (wife Alisha) of Bothell, Washington; Lisa Wurth (husband Dr. Brett) of Springfield; Barry Edwards (wife Apryl) of Petersburg; and Ethan Edwards (wife Brittany) of Loami. Mary loved every moment spent with her seven great-grandchildren: Juliana, Amaya, and Quentin Davis of Bothell, Washington; Evelynn and Emmaline Edwards of Loami; and Griffin and Brooklyn Edwards of Petersburg.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband; son, Jerry Davis; parents; and siblings, Ernest Hill and Helen Hill.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens, Illinois. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. with Pastor Paul Rose of Calvary Church officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Indian Point Cemetery.
