Matthew F. “Matt” Winterbauer

Matthew Francis “Matt” Winterbauer, age 85, of Athens, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at his home with family.

Matt was born July 30, 1938 in Springfield, IL, the son of William Winterbauer and Mary Brennan Winterbauer.

He married Theresa Marie Walker on August 10, 1963 at Holy Family Church in Athens, Illinois.

Matt graduated from Athens High School in 1956.  He also attended Hobart Welding School in Troy, Ohio.

Matt was always a full-time farmer, but he also worked at other various other jobs including; carpenter for George Muller, Stetson China Factory, Certified Tank and Equipment, Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Kick Stand Motorcyle Co., Ferring Iron Works, Menard County Highway, and State of Illinois Highway.

When Matt was a young man he liked to race Triumph and Harley Davidson motorcycles.  He raced at Ascot; Los Angeles, California; San Jose, California; Daytona Beach, Florida; Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corp.  He also served on the Farm Bureau Board, Culver-Fancy Prairie Elevator Board, Lincoln Land FS Board, and volunteered on the Fancy Prairie Fire Department.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and a brother, John Winterbauer.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa; sons, Matthew (wife Jody) F. Winterbauer and Luke Winterbauer; daughter, Kathleen Marie (husband Brent) Fawns; two grandchildren, Michael (wife Devan) Winterbauer and Madelynn Winterbauer; brother, William Winterbauer, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Matt will be held from 10:00 AM until time of funeral mass at 11:00 AM on  Friday, November 17, 2023 at St. John Vianney Church in Sherman, Illinois with Fr. Fredrick Mbierre officiating.

Burial will be held immediately after the service at Holy Cross Cemetery in Lincoln, Illinois.
